Ever notice that when poor people in crisis ask for monetary assistance from government, they’re seeking “welfare”? But when corporations demand public money, like, say, the Canadian airlines did last week, the business media create lots of convenient euphemisms, like “stimulus package,” “stabilization package” and “buffer.”
And while we’re on the subject of airlines, is Air Transat really blaming its falling financial fortunes on the September 11 terrorist attacks? Funny, we thought allowing one of your passenger jets to run out of fuel over the Atlantic and crash-land on an island short of mainland Europe might have had something to do with the drop in bookings.
