Canadians are reacting online after opposition leader Pierre Poilievre questioned why anyone would want to have a beer with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
On Tuesday, the Conservative Party leader responded to a recently published Toronto Star article titled, “Nobody wants to have a beer with Justin Trudeau,” on X.
“Why would you want to have a beer with a self-righteous narcissist wagging his finger at you for heating your home & driving a car to work while he jets around the world?” Poilievre said.
He added that Trudeau would make you pick up the tab, including the federal beer tax which goes up on April 1.
On Thursday, Trudeau responded to the X post by saying, “Hey Pierre, hold my beer.”
The Star article discusses Trudeau’s approval rating among voters dropping. As of Feb. 7, Abacus Data polling, on behalf of the Toronto Star, shows a 19-point lead for the Conservatives with 43 per cent support among those polled, compared to 24 per cent for the Liberals.
Canadians were quick to react to the back and forth between Trudeau and Poilievre with the hashtag #HaveABeerWithTrudeau trending on X Thursday afternoon.
“I’d rather have a beer with Trudeau than an apple with Poilievre,” one X user said, referring to last October when Poilievre was filmed chomping on an apple while being interviewed by a journalist.
“I don’t drink, but I would definitely have a non-alcoholic beer with Trudeau!! It would be an honour!” another user said.
Meanwhile, some would pass on the chance to have a cold one with him.
“I’d rather have a beer with Pierre. You should make an event called this,” one user said, while referencing the Star title.
Some people even said they would want to have a cold one with both of the leaders.
