Canadians have begun submitting their suggestions for names of Toronto’s new WNBA team after a callout for brand ideas was posted today.
“From the moment this franchise was announced, we’ve promised that this will be Canada’s team. That commitment starts today, by inviting every Canadian into the process of shaping our new name and logo,” WNBA Toronto Team President Teresa Resch said in a press release.
The organization is looking for more than just name ideas, but everything from colour recommendations, personal anecdotes, sounds and pictures that represent what the team could stand for.
Essentially, the team is turning to Canadians to form its WNBA identity. Fans who are interested in sharing their input can go on the NameYourTeam.ca website or text WNBA to 1-833-662-3664 until Aug. 28.

A group of designers and advisors will review all submissions, create a shortlist of options which will then undergo a full legal review including a trademark search before final selection. The final name will be chosen by the team and league leadership and will be shared with Canadians through the team’s blog and social media.
Canadians expect the final name by the end of the year.
“Our goal is to create the most inclusive and participatory process in sports history, because we know that we’re not just creating a brand. We’re building a community,” Resch said.
Earlier in May, Toronto was awarded a WNBA team and became the first franchise outside the U.S.
Owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, the team will be playing at Coca Cola Coliseum and occasionally at Scotiabank Arena.
The team is slated to enter the league in May 2026, as the 14th WNBA franchise. It will follow the Golden State Valkyries who are set to play in 2025.
Some people online have already started to provide name suggestions.
“Toronto Crown is my pick,” one X user said.
“Of all the ones I’ve heard, I still like the Toronto Sirens the best,” another user said.
“Toronto sweetergyals,” another user commented.
“Toronto North Stars,” another comment read.
