Donald Trump will be the 47th president of the United States, marking a huge comeback to the White House.

The Republican cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency with a win in Wisconsin, declared early Wednesday morning.

The 78-year-old beat out Democratic Kamala Harris, the first woman of colour to lead for a major party, and marks the second time he defeated a female rival in a general election.

The results end a tumultuous election run that included two assassination attempts against Trump and a shift to a new Democratic nominee just a month before the party’s convention, after President Joe Biden exited the race amid alarm about his advanced age.

Trump’s win marks many historical milestones. He is the first former president to return to power since Grover Cleveland regained the White House in the 1892 election. He is also the first person convicted of a felony to be elected president and the oldest president elected ever.

His vice president is Ohio Sen. JD Vance, 40, who will become the highest-ranking member of the Millennial generation in the U.S. government, according to the Associated Press.

During Trump’s election campaign, he vowed to pursue an agenda centered on reshaping the federal government.

Speaking to his supporters on Wednesday, Trump claimed he had won “an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” the Associated Press reports.
