Doors wide open, A/C blasting

Rating: NNNNN

You’d think after all the smog alerts and energy shortage warnings, local businesses would take the hint. No such luck. There’s a little piggy in all of us and a lot of piggy in a few. Here are some of the worst of them.

Club Monaco, 403 Queen West

What the manager says: “I think a lot of people get the message that you’re not open if the door’s shut, especially in the summer. We also keep the doors open all winter.

Guess, 409 Queen West

What the manager says: “It’s all about competition around here. If one store has their doors open, they think they have the edge.

Calvin Klein, 150 Bloor West

What a spokesperson says: “It’s nice and cold inside. Yesterday, a customer went one step outside and said ‘Here, it’s 40 degrees,’ and took one step back into the store and said ‘Here it’s about 18 degrees.’ I did the same and nodded right away. Yes, our system is very nice.

The Levi’s Store, 322 Yonge

What a spokesperson says: “It’s coming from our boss. We have to abide with what she wants.

Godiva, 131 Bloor West

What a spokesperson says: “Is this going to be in the magazine? Have you called the Eaton Centre? Because their doors are open all the time no matter what. We dim the lights here. We only leave the doors open during busy periods.

Roots, 100 Bloor West

What a spokesperson says: “We normally have the doors closed all the time, but we’re concerned about the door being broken and having to have it repaired. That’s why we keep it open.

Aldo, 50 Bloor West

What a spokesperson says: “One man walking by who wasn’t even a customer closed our doors, saying something about wasting energy. I’d say maybe from a financial perspective [it’s a waste], but keeping the doors open means customers don’t have to open the doors themselves.

Space FB, 389 Queen West

What the manager says: “The way the door is positioned, you kind of don’t see it if you’re just walking by.

Aritzia, 280 Queen West

What the manager says: “It would be a big deal for me [to close the doors] because I have big black wooden doors, and nobody could even see into my store if they were shut.

The Body Shop, 138 Cumberland

What a spokesperson says: “We lower the air conditioning when we have the door open.

Le Chateau, 772 Yonge

What a spokesperson says: “I keep it on low, but don’t tell anybody that. We’re instructed to have the A/C off if the doors are open.

Baton Rouge, 218 Yonge Street

What a spokesperson says: “I know there was a maintenance guy from the mall to look at [the A/C]. It was really stuffy in here. But today the A/C seems to be working fine.
