Hangover cure #4: The Prairie Oyster

As promised, we’re rolling out reader-submitted hangover cures all week, to tie in with our Holiday Drink Guide that appeared today in print. Today, Andrew Donnachie in High Park introduces us to the Prairie Oyster.

“If you’re so obliterated the next morning that you’re unable to go out and grab the traditional greasy breakfast,” Andrew writes, “Then hands down the best hangover cure is a Prairie Oyster.”

But what is a Prairie Oyster exactly? Well here’s Andrew’s recipe.

  • A raw egg (yolk unbroken)
  • A tiny splash of water
  • A dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Another dash of Frank’s Red Hot
  • Top it off with a sprinkle of salt/pepper to taste.

“In my grandfather’s day this would have used gin instead of water,” Andrew says, “But we know now-thanks science!-that drinking while hungover does not help. Anyway, take it in one gulp, relax for about 10 minutes and then you’re all set. Eggs contain an Amino Acid called Cysteine, which helps your body break down alcohol, so for someone who can’t eat a proper breakfast, this allows you to kick-start your recovery and settle your stomach.”

Hardcore, Andrew. We like it. Got a better solution? E-mail us at web@nowtoronto.com with the subject line “HANGOVER CURE,” your name, and where you live in Toronto and we may publish your response, and you may win a prize. And what is that prize? Well, how about gifts certificates to Parts and Labour and Medieval Times? That’ll crush even the most bruising day-after headache.
