Happening NOW: April 26, 2010

What’s happening April 26, 2010:

Is Giorgio Mammoliti getting jealous of all the attention Rob Ford has been getting? Mammoliti, in an “I’m just as bad a choice for mayor as Ford” move, has said by-law officers should be given guns to aid in the fight against graffiti, street posters, and sanity.

If that makes you want to walk down to city hall and knock on Mammoliti’s door, it’s going to get a lot tougher come May 3. While nobody can just walk in, in the past a simple call from the inside of City Hall’s second floor outer ring would allow anyone to enter. Now everyone needs a sign-in/sign-out escort.

42,000 gallons of oil a day is what’s spewing from that offshore drilling platform that failed in the Gulf of Mexico. Ironicly, this disaster comes less than a month after Obama’a offshore drilling expansion announcement.

Back at home, Scarborough residents are getting burned by buried 60s-era zoning that’s bubbled up as high-rise condos. Their councillor is willing to fight for them, and it should be interesting to see the argument that a lot has been learned about zoning and planning since the late 60s can sway the OMB.

Finally, somewhat connected, a U.K. artist has created a beautiful imagined city skyline out of staples. More shots on the artist’s website.[rssbreak]
