Happening NOW: March 30, 2010

What’s happening March 30, 2010:

We’re number one! In sucking – specifically, at commute times. The Toronto Board of Trade’s annual scorecard ranks us last in how effective we are at getting to work. The 80 minute average commute makes us worse than L.A., which makes the province look even stupider – yes it’s possible – for their brutal $4 billion swipe to the sensible Transit City Plan.

Torontonians got a taste of mayoral candidates at the first debate at Mary Ward Catholic Secondary. The end result? Nothing you didn’t already know, although it looks like some are considering Toronto-poison candidate Rocco Rossi seriously. Sad how that makes Smitherman look like a reasonable choice.

The least shocking thing you’re going to hear about Canada’s war in Afghanistan: the U.S. officially wants us to stick around longer than 2011.

Sure Earth Hour felt sucky this year. We didn’t improve on last year’s energy drop, and street lights/critical lighting really dampen the whole experience. But if you want to be impressed, even in light of reality – the Big Picture can help you.

Finally, mark April 17 on your bike-related calendars. A new D-I-Y non-profit bike shop/advocacy location is opening in the east end. Bike Sauce hopes to operate on volunteer efforts, and it seems like they’re pulling a Bike Pirates for easterners. The more the merrier![rssbreak]
