Happening NOW: March 31, 2010

What’s happening March 31, 2010:

Ontario workers making $9.50 are getting a lift thanks to an increase to the rock-bottom hourly wage today. The new rate is $10.25. It’s still not going to fill the Special Diet hole or make that massive wasteful commute feel better.

The TTC’s union wants to hear from you. Three town halls are planned for April and May with the goal of friendly dialogue. This Let’s Talk program is nice on the outside, but chances are slim you’re going open a useful dialogue with drivers who abuse break privileges or threaten to break your cellphones – they mostly just grunt.

Speaking of videos on the TTC, the Toronto Urban Film Festival launches its call for submissions tomorrow. These are the films that end up on those subway video screens. Wonder what kind of nightmare this will be for already camera shy transit workers.

Anyone out there disappointed after hearing that Barbara Budd was leaving CBC Radio’s As It Happens, will be downright pissed to hear that after 17 years of hosting the move wasn’t her idea – she just “didn’t fit in with the plan.”

McDonald’s opened its first hamburger university in China. With the eating-out market growing by 10 per cent a year there, it needs to ramp up courses in advanced burger stacking and/or McMuffin egg juggling. Oh, and while the place might keep people from pursuing real degrees, the self-described Harvard of its industry figures people will use it as a step to college.

Finally, as you get on your bike this morning, be thankful it’s not 2,500 years ago and you don’t have to carry your giant wooden tricycle down a flight of stairs.[rssbreak]
