Happening NOW: May 4, 2010

What’s happening May 4, 2010:

It shouldn’t be shocking, since life along Queen West has being going upscale for decades, but this one will hurt the neighbourhood harder than usual. Rising rents are forcing the Square Fruit Market & Groceries at Euclid and Queen out after 16 years.

Conservative senator Nancy Ruth wants NGOs to “shut the fuck up” about pushing Steve Harper’s religious fundamentalist fuelled opposition to funding abortion as part of G8 child and maternal-health initiatives. Why? Because she says Harps will just make everything worse. Now that’s an endorsement!

The TTC presented its new advisory panel (a group formed to make customer service suggestions) to the public at Kipling Station this morning. They were named a couple of days ago.

Meanwhile, Google, which is basically in the business of owning a little bit of everything, is investing a few mil (US $38.8) in North Dakota wind farms. It almost feels like they’re using spare change for an ad buy.

Finally, China’s World Expo opened May 1, and you have to see the photos.[rssbreak]
