It didn’t take long for George Smitherman to clash with John Tory in an unofficial debate on Tory’s Newtalk 1010 radio show. The 15 minutes (Globe has a transcript) of back and forth between the mayoralty hopefuls spent plenty of time establishing that Smitherman is against a Toronto tax, vague on highway tolls, somewhere murky on land transfer taxes, and clear that you not say he squandered $1 bil on eHealth, sir.

TTC Tokens are already being hoarded by transit riders trying to dodge the $0.25 fare hike that looms in the coming months, so the TTC is cutting the supply to five at a time.

Need a good reason to start collecting those tokens? A 213-page report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says Toronto is wasting over $3 bil stuck in traffic. We’re too dependent on cars for commutes. Suggestions include tolls on the Gardiner and the general investment in public transit. How about adding improved cycling infrastructure into the mix?

Toronto firm Cossette won Best in Show at the Canadian Newspaper Association’s 2009 Extra Awards for turning the Edmonton Sun into a McDonald’s Breakfast Burrito. Jury’s still out on whether this version of the burrito was tastier and more nutritious than the real thing.

Finally, Niut Blanche’s, wait, Scotiabank Nuit Blanche’s People’s Choice winners have been announced, but more importantly for the city bean counters and the “is it worth it?” crowd, the free night of art pulled in $18 mil for the local economy. That’s a 24 per cent rise over last year.[rssbreak]
