Happening NOW: September 23, 2010

What’s happening September 23, 2010:

It’s really quite sad when this Conservative government, in particular cabinet ministers who should have more class, spews rhetoric. The latest opportunity was a Canadian Club speech by Jim Flaherty that ditched common sense for an ideological sermon. Good thing there are talented satirists out there to remind us of Jim Flaherty’s “elfin heritage”.

For more dirty talk – you’ll have to read this year’s Environmental Commissioner’s report. It’s 200-plus pages of gloom that includes landfills polluting groundwater, the Great Lakes getting worse, air quality standards that aren’t up to snuff, a lack of trees, illegal mines, and dwindling caribou.

Let’s get your spirits up. How about news that the Humber cinema – the “other” Bloor West theatre (the Runnymede turned into a Chapters years ago) is getting set to come back to life?

Sure, it gets you in the papers, but Netflix can’t be pleased about the blowback from hiring extras to, “look really excited, particularly if asked by media to do any interviews about the prospect of Netflix in Canada.” They’ve since apologized.

Lastly, Dan Savage has launched a YouTube project to help convey an “it gets better” message to LGBT kids through others’ experiences.
