There’s mixed reaction to news about the Ontario Science Centre moving to Ontario Place.

The Science Centre’s move is one of the changes included in new redevelopment plans for Ontario Place, along with the extension of 42 acres of public land, an all-season concert stage and marina with retail stores and dining.

Most of Ontario Place is currently vacant, after it was shut down in 2012 due to declining attendance.

The government has not yet announced the cost of the proposed move or improvements to the tourist attraction.

The government reports construction on the new and improved Ontario Place will commence in 2025.

The new Ontario Place is also expected to feature health and wellness services, including Therme Canada’s proposed mega-spa.

The Science Centre is located in the Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park area and has served as a staple in the community.

As a result, Ford’s announcement has sparked both political officials and residents to speak out on the move.

While speaking on the CBC’s Metro Morning radio show on Wednesday, City Councillor of the Flemingdon area, Jon Burnside, said the Science Centre should not be relocated as it’s an integral part of the community.

Toronto mayoral candidate Olivia Chow is not in favour of the move and began a petition urging those who oppose Ford’s plans to take a stand.

“The Science Centre should be revitalized in consultation with the local community, and it should happen alongside a meaningful investment in improved services and affordable housing,” she said in a statement

Mitzie Hunter is also opposed to the move and says it’s a “bad, unfair idea” that ignores the needs of the community.

Meanwhile, one Ontario resident and nurse says the idea is yet another cause of destruction by Ford’s government.

Another Twitter user says it’s an awful decision that will destroy a public venue for private profit.

Some support the move. One tweet says, “…I couldn’t be more pleased for this vision from the Ontario Government to bring the Science Centre and Ontario Place together!”
