Jeers for Tory at taser rally

Rating: NNNNN

Some 300 protesters, including reps from the Canadian Polish Congress, gathered for a sombre affair of candles and remembrances Saturday, November 24, for Robert Dziekanski, the Polish man who died at Vancouver’s airport moments after RCMP officers used a taser on him .

Human rights group Amnesty International, represented by Andy Buxton , called the RCMP’s handling of the situation “a violation of human rights law.”

Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash called for national standards to be put into place before tasers are considered for use by police.

Burlington MP Mike Wallace was jeered for trying to defend the government’s position — Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day has asked the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP to review all RCMP protocols on the use of tasers.

Event organizer Martin Mlynarczyk says the issue goes beyond simply police use of tasers. “It’s an issue of discrimination and police brutality,” he says.
