Hot gossip has city councillor and new prez of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Jack Layton as a leadership candidate for the federal NDP. While the FCM will certainly raise Layton's national profile, this could get interesting, since his partner, fellow councillor Olivia Chow, is often cited as a future mayoral candidate. Chow and Layton, who have both mounted hard-fought federal campaigns in the past, are just the tonic the out-of-touch NDP needs in Ottawa. Since Layton would need Chow's help for an Ottawa move, it could set the stage for fellow NDP councillor David Miller to run for mayor. We can dream, can't we?
