Sorry to break the news, but it seems dogs are not every man’s best friend!
This comes as the city is reminding residents to keep their dogs leashed, amid a rise in ruff interactions with dogs off leash.
The city says in 2022, there was a 39 per cent increase in the number of dog attacks on humans and a 19 per cent increase in the number of altercations involving dogs and other animals.
Many of these incidents could have been prevented if dogs had been leashed, supervised and kept under control at all times. Owners are also reminded to ensure their yards are secure to prevent their dogs from escaping.

Despite many owners and their hardcore beliefs about how much they know their dog, the city emphasizes that animal behaviour is unpredictable and should be treated as such. Here are a few tips to help keep your dog safe and ensure a pawsitive experience for everyone:
- Keep dogs leashed in public, unless in designated off-leash areas. The leash must be no longer than two metres, securely attached to a collar or harness and held securely. Keeping your dog leashed will also ensure they do not get lost or run into any harm.
- Stoop and scoop. Remember to bring a bag when out for walks and dispose of dog waste in green bins or garbage bins.
- Purchase a pet licence and renew it annually. If your dog gets lost, a pet licence will help them get home faster. Plus, it is the law. Pet licenses can be purchased and renewed online, by phone and by mail.
- Respect and protect Toronto’s urban wildlife, parks and green spaces. Dogs are allowed off-leash only in designated off-leash areas so that they do not trample plants, dig holes or chase wildlife. Across the city, there are more than 75 off-leash areas for dogs to roam freely. Pet owners are reminded to keep a careful eye on their dogs and be respectful and mindful of others, as parks are meant to be shared spaces for everyone to enjoy.
At the end of the day, the city stresses that pet owners are responsible for their dog and any injuries or damage caused by any dog in their care. Ensuring your dog is trained and socialized is essential for a dog’s well-being and will help ensure safer interactions with other dogs and people.
