What to know

  • Lotto Max’s jackpot hit $90 million after Tuesday’s $85 million prize went unclaimed, marking the largest single lottery jackpot in Canadian history.
  • On top of the $90 million grand prize, the upcoming draw includes 18 $1-million Maxmillions prizes and 90 Maxplus prizes valued at $100,000, bringing the total prize pool to $117 million.
  • This marks the first time the jackpot has reached the new $90 million cap since Lotto Max raised the limit from $80 million in April.
  • While many online are buying tickets to join in on the fun of dreaming big, others are arguing the jackpot should be capped lower to spread $1-million prizes across more winners.

The next Lotto Max winner is about to get Canada’s biggest lottery prize ever, as the jackpot reaches $90 million.

According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), the previous record prize of $85 million awarded at a night’s draw on Tuesday went unclaimed, and the prize has now climbed by an additional $5 million.

The lucky winner will be able to claim the prize following the next Lotto Max draw scheduled for Oct. 16. On top of the grand prize, Lotto Max will award 18 $1-million Maxmillions prizes, as well as 90 Maxplus prizes valued at $100,000 each.

The total value of the prizes to be announced on Friday is $117 million.

Lotto Max previously announced prize climb

This is the biggest prize ever to be awarded through a Canadian lottery draw.

The record-breaking prize comes months after Lotto Max announced it would increase its jackpot from $80 million to $90 million.

“Lotto Max announced in April that it was increasing the jackpot cap from $80 million to $90 million. This is the first time the top prize has reached that threshold, as previous jackpots were claimed before the new limit was reached.

Internet reacts

Online, reactions are already pouring in regarding the record-breaking prize.

Some said they are planning to put their names on for a chance to win the $90 million, and sharing what they would do with the money.

“I don’t usually buy lottery tickets, but with a jackpot this high, why not? My chances are 100 per cent higher winning a piece of this having bought one, over not. And it’s fun to dream for a few days,” one Reddit user said.

“If I win, I will definitely book a world trip to my mom and dad,” another Redditor said.

Others said they wish the prize was spread among more winners.

“It’s ridiculous it can go to $90 million. Better off capping the jackpot at a lower amount and giving way more one million dollar prizes to more people. Just not as flashy I guess,” one person said.

“They should really increase the amounts for the second and third level prizes,” another user added.

“And once again one person will win it. Why not have 90 $1 million prizes?” a different person suggested.
