Matchmaking Toronto’s millionaires

In a city with over 2.7 million people, finding “the one” can be tough. And according to at least one relationship expert, dating and romance is even harder for Toronto’s high-income earners. At least three local millionaires are hoping for a chance at love on November 13, when Natacha Noël of Absolute Bachelor Club will be hosting a matchmaking event at Sevan Art Gallery (619A Yonge, at Isabella).

Noël, who is a certified matchmaker by the Matchmaking Institute in New York, started her company two years ago. She’s based in Toronto and Montreal, and claims that the amount of choice in Canada’s biggest cities makes it difficult to find the right person.

“People who come to me, they don’t want to date someone they work with. They don’t want to date friends of friends. They’ve exploited all of their networks, and they just want someone new,” Noël says. “What they need, however, is reassurance, which they find through a matchmaker.”

Her clients all earn a “comfortable six figures” or more and typically have very specific requirements – whether that be above-average looks or career success – when it comes to potential partners. Male clients, Noël says, tend to seek women who are either financially independent and “make $150,000 to $250,000” or who don’t have careers at all. Female clients are usually interested in men who make the same amount or more than they do.

The obstacle, Noël notes, is finding a match who appreciates and is accustomed to the lifestyles of the rich.

“When you are successful, you have a different lifestyle than the regular nine-to-fiver. For instance, you may have a lot of business travelling,” she says. “The partner really has to understand this going in, which is not to say they’re not going to support your goals and your dreams, but it comes with a responsibility.”

In Toronto, this might mean attending fundraising galas most weekends, schmoozing with the city’s elite and living in the public eye. “There’s a lot of pressure and it’s not for everyone,” Noël warns.

While most of her clients are men, she doesn’t consider the women who date them to be “gold diggers.”

“There’s nothing wrong with it. What girl hasn’t said, ‘It would be nice to marry a doctor.’ We don’t have a problem with someone wanting to date someone with means. With means, you can accomplish things, you can travel, you can learn. There’s so many things you can do with money,” Noël says. “That doesn’t mean these people have bad values.”

At the November 13 event, Noël will be matchmaking for two male clients and one female client. (Descriptions of these people can be found on Absolute Bachelor Club’s website.) She says that both bachelors are in their mid-40s and are looking for women in the age range of 28 to 40. The bachelorette client is 26 years old.

Interested applicants can fill out an online form ahead of the event or simply show up at Sevan Art Gallery between 12 pm and 8 pm Noël advises to dress as you would on a first date and be truthful about your intentions.

“We’re looking to make a match with two individuals who would be comfortable meeting each other,” she says. “So we’re looking for people with real relationship goals.”
