Mexico vs. South Africa: Best Toronto spots to watch FIFA World Cup opener

The World Cup is officially kicking off with Mexico and South Africa facing each out in the first tournament match on Thursday. 

For those looking to watch the game and cheer on the teams, here’s a list of some of the hottest Toronto watch parties screening the match. 

Nathan Phillips Square 

Location: 100 Queen St. W.

As Toronto gets filled with World Cup energy, the city is embracing the sporting event by screening select matches at the Nathan Phillips Square. 

To celebrate the kickoff of the tournament, the first game screening will be the Mexico vs. South Africa match, beginning at 3 p.m.

Those who attend are also welcome to embrace the event hands-on by playing soccer on the Visa Street Soccer Park, which is replacing the fountain space in the square, and participate in other soccer-themed activities on site. 

Tickets are not required for this screening, and more information is available on the city’s website.

Gibbons Irish Pub

Location: 26 Duncan St.

Elevated Irish pub Gibbons, located downtown Toronto, will be screening all World Cup matches, including the Mexico vs. South Africa game. 

Fans can enjoy the game on a 20-foot screen, as well as on multiple TVs across the venue, and celebrate every goal with the energetic crowd on site.

Lula Lounge Toronto

Location: 1585 Dundas St. W.

Popular venue Lula Lounge will also be hosting a watch party, including a special World Cup menu for attendees, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The game will be screened on a 14-foot LED screen and five 75″ TVs across the venue, so fans won’t miss any plays. The kitchen service and bar also includes a specially-curated menu for game days, including plenty of delicious sharables, from al Pastor taquitos to chicken wings. 

Admission to this watch party is free, but a minimum fee of $40 for food and beverage will be charged per person when booking. Attendees are also encouraged to get their tickets online to guarantee a spot, as demand could be high in person.

Thai Tavern 

Location: 221 Richmond St. W.

Another downtown Toronto bar screening the event is Thai Tavern, which is welcoming soccer fans to enjoy the games with its live screenings, while grabbing a Thai-inspired bite and ice-cold beer. 

The event promises an energetic atmosphere, perfect to enjoy with friends. Tickets are not required, and walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended for those who want to secure their spots. The event starts at 3 p.m. and more information can be found on the restaurant’s website

RendezViews

Location: 229 Richmond St. W.

One of the most popular screening spots in downtown Toronto will also be screening the first World Cup match. 

Mexico vs. South Africa will be screening at RendezViews starting at 3 p.m., with fans being invited to join the cheering crowd, and enjoy food and drinks. 
The watch party is on a first-come-first-serve basis, but attendees can join the guest list online. Those who do so are advised to show up early, as joining the list doesn’t guarantee seating. For more information, visit Eventbrite.
