A Milton woman suffered life-changing injuries following an acid attack earlier this month and a family member has been charged in the incident.

On Mar. 9, shortly before 1:30 p.m., the victim was walking in the area of Syer Drive and Maxted Crescent near her home when she was approached by someone, Halton Regional Police said in a press release on Wednesday.

Police said the suspect threw an “unknown chemical” onto the victim which caused serious burns to her face and body.

The suspect allegedly then stole the victim’s cell phone and ran away, police said. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Police said they would not identify the victim to protect her identity and to respect the family’s privacy. However, a Gofundme page has identified her as 22-year-old Bradi McCoy, and the CBC has confirmed its legitimacy with the victim’s family.

Following an investigation, police said a 57-year-old woman from Quebec was arrested in Montreal on Wednesday. She turned out to be related to the victim, police said.

The suspect was charged with aggravated assault, administer a noxious substance and robbery. She is currently waiting for a bail hearing.

The  Gofundme page has already garnered over $60,000 of a $200,000 goal since it was created on Mar. 13.

McCoy is described as a bright and bubbly young woman who is working towards becoming a teacher.

“Bradi is well-known and loved in our community. For many years she has shared her talents with the Town of Milton in the I-CAN special needs programs, and in various leadership roles in aquatics and recreation. Bradi is currently an EA with the Halton District School Board,” reads the Gofundme page.

The money will go towards her recovery and future medical needs.
