Several Silk and Great Value brand plant-based beverages are being recalled due to listeria contamination concerns.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a statement on Monday, advising the public not to consume or sell specific plant-based refrigerated beverages from the two Canadian brands under Danone Canada.
The recall affects Great Value’s almond beverages, as well as Silk’s almond milk, almond-coconut milk, coconut milk, and oat milk in 1.75 and 1.89-litre packages.
The impacted products have Best Before dates up to and including October 4, 2024, and carry the product code 7825.
Silk Coconut Unsweetened drinks in 1.89 litre cartons with best before dates leading up to and including Sept. 27 are being recalled as well.
The CFIA recommends either disposing the recalled products or returning them to the place of purchase.
The agency says the recall was made after foodborne illnesses linked with the consumption of these products were reported. They are also urging consumers to visit a healthcare provider if they think they became sick because of consuming the product(s).
Food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause illness, the agency said in the statement. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness.
In response to the recall, some Canadians have expressed frustration.
One X user shared, “This is just great, I have the coconut, half of it’s gone… so this is why I feel like crap??”
“I have 3 containers unopened of the recalled Silk Almond with the affected upc codes which I will throw out but there’s no start date from which to gauge if I’ve already consumed affected products. I’ll assume I have,” another X user added, expressing their confusion.
Meanwhile, an Ontario resident shared her experience opening a spoiled Silk milk pack, “I opened a container of Silk Dark Chocolate Soy milk this week, bb: Aug 21st, that was definitely spoiled. I won’t be consuming it, but it’s interesting to find this announcement without its inclusion.. they’ve tested safe?”
