Ontario reported 1,848 new cases of COVID-19 and 45 new deaths on December 11, the highest death toll the province has seen since May 12.
Of the new deaths reported today, 29 were among long-term care residents.
The province announced yesterday that long-term care home workers in Toronto and Ottawa will be the first to receive vaccines when the first batch arrives on December 15.
Ontario detected a record 1,983 new cases on Thursday, 1,890 on Wednesday and 1,676 on Tuesday. The seven-day rolling average is at 1,872.
There are 469 new cases reported in Toronto, 386 in Peel, 205 in York Region and 106 in Windsor-Essex.
Ontario completed 63,051 tests in the past 24 hours, the highest number of daily tests completed since the start of the pandemic for the second consecutive day. That marks a positivity rate of 2.9 per cent.
There are 16,283 active COVID-19 cases in Ontario as of December 11. Hospitalizations dipped down to 808 from 829 the day before, though intensive care patients are still on the rise, reaching 235. Of those patients, 124 are on ventilators, down eight from the day before.
School-related cases accounted for 151 of the new cases reported today, with 125 among students and 26 among staff. There are no new schools with a reported case in the province, though one additional school has closed down due to an outbreak in the past day, bringing the total to 11 schools.
There have been 136,631 COVID-19 cases in Ontario to date, including 116,432 resolved – up 1,753 from the day before. There have been 3,916 deaths.
