Some Ontarians enjoyed the change of weather, with the province seeing below seasonal temperatures for multiple weeks prior.
While other residents weren’t so happy about the heat.
Following the heat wave, some parts of southwestern Ontario’s weather flipped a switch, with thunderstorm and even tornado conditions affecting some cities.
Hamilton was one city that was in the cross hairs of both tumultuous weather conditions.
What was initially a clear, hot and sunny day for the city, quickly turned into a disastrous one, with a warning from Environment Canada cautioning residents of the thunderstorm to come that was expected to see flying debris, as well as damage across the city.
One TikTok user wrote that they witnessed multiple small funnel clouds in Hamilton on Tuesday.
“Had 10+ tornado warnings in the area with funnel clouds just spawning everywhere and then going away,” they said.
Despite dark, windy and rainy conditions, many residents weren’t happy with how the government went about warning them, with multiple people complaining on social media about receiving more than one emergency warning on their mobile devices.
“Ten [emergency] alerts for a couple drops of water,” one TikTok user said.
Another TikTok user said the weather was not serious enough for any emergency warning to be sent.
“My phone told me to TAKE COVER due to severe, damaging wind,” they wrote. “It rained for 10 mins.”
“I understand the necessity of weather alerts but surely there’s a better way,” a different TikTok user questioned. “…I don’t need an alert for every time the storm moves a little east, just the area I’m in. Three max, anything more than that and that thing better be right out my window.”
Amid the storm, some Reddit users were sharing updates as they came.
“Lower Stoney Creek also just got my 5th warning,” one Reddit user wrote. “It keeps saying the same thing but I’m guessing its bad enough to repeat the warning.”
The storm also caused some destruction, especially to trees in the area.
“I had a tree branch break right above mine and my 5 yr olds head as we were trying to walk home,” one Reddit user shared.
“I mean, I appreciate what they’re trying to do, but the number of messages I got made it seem like Armageddon was upon us. And then nothing,” another Reddit user said before adding they believed one warming was enough per significant event.
One Reddit user from Wellington, Ont. experienced the severe weather closer to the tornado hotspot around London, Ont., and said these warnings are crucial for events like these.
“If you have ever lived through a tornado you would appreciate the warnings so much more,” they said.
The last tornado warning Hamilton experienced was on March 16 of this year.
