Toronto police have identified a young girl more than a year after her remains were found in a dumpster in the city’s Rosedale neighbourhood.
The girl has been identified as Neveah Tucker who was four years old at the time of her death, police said.
Her remains were found on May 2, 2022 in a dumpster at a construction site near Castle Frank Road and Dale Avenue.
“Thanks to a tip from the community, and some great work by investigators in the center of Forensic Sciences. I can now identify this little girl as Neveah Tucker, of Toronto,” Insp. Hank Idsinga said in a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Idsinga said Tucker’s mother has been notified about the latest developments. He did not provide further details about the mother’s status.
Idsinga said Tucker was born on May 18, 2017. Police believe she died in 2021 and would have been nearly five years old when her remains were discovered. Her cause of death has not been identified.
No arrests or charges have been laid.
Police said they are not calling her death a homicide, but Idsinga said “ this could still potentially become a homicide case.”
“The pathologist wasn’t able to identify a cause of death. So, we’re not saying it’s a homicide. We’ll see where the investigation takes us,” he said.
Last month, a memorial was held at Rosedale Presbyterian Church to honour one year since her remains were found.
