Toronto police will begin enforcing paid on-street parking on all statutory holidays starting on Family Day, Feb. 19.

Typically parking enforcement does not issue tickets on these holidays due to past choices rooted in bylaws and operational factors.

But the change comes in response to the evolving needs of the city, police said in a Monday news release.

“Streetcar corridors, bike lanes, CaféTO, and other infrastructure developments are highlighting the necessity for more consistent parking enforcement,” the news release stated.

Police also said the demand for parking has grown significantly in Toronto and that enforcing payment will address the increasing competition for curb space and the need for efficient parking management.

Historically, police have not enforced parking laws on statutory holidays, however, there is no by-law exempting those days, therefore the change aligns with current by-laws which permit enforcement over statutory holidays.

The money collected from parking tickets is controlled by and collected by the City of Toronto.
