Tetra Paks a wallop

• Lightweight, sure, but they’re also light on recyclable content. Paper is the only useful element for recyclers, and it’s only reused in toilet paper.

• Plastic and aluminum layers are tough to separate, ultimately not worth the effort, so as much as 75 per cent of these end up in landfill.

• The boxes that do get recycled end up being processed out of province.

• New Tetra Paks require all-virgin paper, aluminum and plastic and lots of energy to make.

• LCBO wines in Tetra Paks are filled from bulk vats and could easily be bottled in refillable glass instead, the way the Beer Store does it.
