The world’s richest families were revealed and one Toronto clan made the cut.

Bloomberg dropped a list of the 25 wealthiest families on the planet and only one family from Canada broke through, taking the 10th spot.

The Thomson family is Canada’s richest family, and according to the report, they are worth a whopping $71 billion.

Their wealth can be traced back to the early 1930s when Roy Thomson opened a radio station in Ontario.

He would later set his eyes on the newspaper industry and became the country’s leading owner.

Thomson bought his first newspaper, the Timmins Press, back in 1934.

The family reportedly holds a 69 per cent stake in financial data and services provider Thomson Reuters.

The Toronto-based company made $6.6 billion in revenue last year.

According to Forbes, the family also holds a stake in telecom giant Bell Canada and owns the Globe and Mail newspaper.

In 1976, Roy’s son, Ken, became chairman of the family business after his death.

And in 2006, Ken’s son, David took over after he died.
