Trick-or-treating for kids with allergies can often be a difficult experience because of the risks associated with food sensitivities.
To help with this, Nextdoor Canada has brought back its annual Treat Map app that allows neighbours to provide information about the treats they’ll be handing out.
This means neighbours can let parents know if they are giving out allergy-free treats, making it easier for kids to trick-or-treat safely.
According to a study conducted by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, peanut-triggered anaphylaxis increases by 85 per cent during Halloween compared to the rest of the year.
In addition to treats, the interactive app can also inform users of where the most decorated houses are, which ones are giving king-sized chocolate bars and which local businesses are offering Halloween promotions.
“For the first time this year, neighbors can move the Treat Map and ‘Search this Area’ to see pins in neighborhoods beyond their own. This feature allows neighbors to open the Treat Map and find decorated homes and places to trick-or-treat in other neighborhoods and towns,” the tech company said in a statement earlier this month.
The app is also beneficial for people with disabilities because users can choose to provide photos outlining accessibility supports in their homes.
Overall, the app’s goal is to create a more inclusive and safe experience for trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
