Fans are celebrating a historic moment for women’s football as Canadian forward Olivia Smith is reportedly heading to Arsenal in a record-breaking £1 million ($1.85 million CAD) transfer.

The 20-year-old forward is reportedly set to sign with Arsenal in a transfer that will make her the first-ever £1 million player in women’s football history, according to news reports.

The reported fee surpasses the previous record set in January, when Chelsea paid approximately $1.67 million for American defender Naomi Girma.

The Toronto-born talent joined Liverpool last summer in a then club-record £200,000 move from Sporting CP in Portugal.

In her debut season, she quickly made her mark, scoring seven goals across 19 appearances and earning the title of Liverpool’s Player of the Season.

She was also shortlisted for both the Women’s Super League Player of the Season and Rising Star awards.

Internationally, Smith became the youngest player ever to suit up for Canada’s senior national team when she debuted at just 15 years old.

Since then, she’s racked up four goals in 19 senior appearances and was twice named Canada Soccer’s Young Player of the Year in 2019 and again in 2024.

Fans online are buzzing about the move and what it means for the future of women’s football.

“Huge for Arsenal WFC, been some worries about the age of that attack and this is such an exciting player to get. The world record fee and all women’s home fixtures being in the Emirates next season is also huge for women’s football in England,” one Reddit user wrote.

“The £1m barrier was always going to be broken at some point, and for a 20 y/o with her whole career ahead of her it’s worth it. Our attack definitely needs some younger players, especially out wide, so I’m all for this,” another user added.

Others pointed to Arsenal’s ambition as a driving force.

“Superb move! And absolutely it’s the time to be going big on players. We’ve got triple the average attendance of Chelsea and are miles ahead of everyone else. We’ve just won the Champions League—it’s time to throw a bit of weight around. We have fantastic team, but taking those final steps means bringing in the right players to lift us further still,” a Reddit user said.

Excitement around Smith’s potential is also front and centre.

“I’m really excited about this! The big money we’re spending shows that we’re ready to reach even higher levels and I’m so excited for how Renee can further develop her!” a user commented.

But while many cheered the record-breaking move, others couldn’t help but reflect on the gap between men’s and women’s transfer fees.

In August 2017, Brazilian player Neymar made headlines when he left FC Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in the largest release transfer fee of €222 million. At just 25 years old, the forward became the most expensive player in football history.

“Man you can really see the gulf in finances between men’s and women’s football if this is the world record,” one user noted.

“Obviously I knew prices would be a lot lower for women’s football, but it’s shocking to hear there’s never been a transfer for a mil before,” another chimed in.
