The Toronto Humane Society is issuing an urgent appeal to keep pets and their families together amid a cost of living crisis in Toronto.

On Wednesday, the non-profit organization launched a campaign to raise awareness about the adversity families are facing right now to keep their pets. The group is also raising funds for those who need support caring for their animals.

“The cost of living in the city has skyrocketed, making access to affordable pet care increasingly scarce. This dire situation has left many community members in the painful position of choosing between feeding themselves or providing for their loyal companions,” Toronto Humane Society’s interim CEO Phil Nichols said in a statement.

“As a result, Toronto Humane Society has witnessed firsthand the agonizing sorrow that grips guardians when they are forced to part with their cherished pets due to the unbearable burden,” he added.

The organization says the issue doesn’t only concern pets, but is reflective of societal challenges.

Its campaign addresses a variety of issues that indicate how animal welfare is linked to broader societal challenges, including the escalating costs of pet care and the housing crisis that is displacing both pets and their guardians.

The Humane Society has seen the impacts of the economic downtown firsthand as demand in their services rose dramatically this year compared to 2022. Within the first six months of 2023, nearly double the amount of food was distributed by the organization to those in need compared to the same period last year.

In addition, more than $1.3 million in below-market rate services were provided from January to September this year throughout the organization’s Public Veterinary Services, compared to $615,000 during the same time period last year.

Donations collected in this campaign will provide essential pet care services to ensure families don’t have to give up their pets.

“By donating today, you can be a lifeline for both pets and their families in our community. Your support is essential, as it will provide vital pet care services to those caught in a cycle of vulnerability,” Nichols said.
