Though the holiday season is a time of giving, it seems as if Toronto is one of the least generous communities across Canada, based on a new report.

Social fundraising platform GoFundMe released its Year in Giving Report on Tuesday which listed the top 20 most-giving communities in the country this year.

To reach its findings, it measured the number of donations per capita made through its website during the past year.

This year, GoFundMe collected two million in donations in Canada, an increase of 7.3 per cent compared to 2022’s amount of $1.86 million.

“Whether it’s helping a neighbour rebuild their home, contributing to a medical fundraiser, or supporting an important local organization, Canadians exemplified the meaning of giving,” GoFundMe Canada Senior Corporate Affairs Manager Ved Khan said in a news release.

“Their unwavering commitment to supporting one another has not only defined 2023, but has set the gold standard for what it means to be a compassionate community,” he continued.

The top 20 Canadian communities are the result of residents supporting community projects, local businesses and those in need, according to GoFundMe.

Among the cities, the number one most generous community is Victoria, British Columbia, with over 23,000 donations. Out of the 20 communities ranked, nine of them are actually located in Ontario and B.C. Meanwhile, Toronto ranked near the bottom of the list at number 16.
