Say goodbye to “you make my dreams come true” and hello to “I’m on the pursuit of happiness.”
After five full seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs is giving the boot to its old goal song, the 80s hit “You Make My Dreams (Come True)” by Hall & Oates and is ushering in Steve Aoki’s 2012 remix of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness.”
On Wednesday, the hockey team introduced the new song during its home opener at Scotiabank Arena against the Montreal Canadiens. Noah Gregor was the first player to score a goal that night and thus prompted the new anthem to play. The Maple Leafs went on to defeat the Montreal Canadiens in a 6-5 victory.
The song is expected to be heard for most home games, however the team says it will be rotating different tracks of various genres throughout the 2023-24 season for its Original Six games, Next Generation Nights and Throwback Thursdays.
The team says it plans on playing some old-school throwbacks and some contemporary jams for the younger audience.
Throughout the summer, the team looked at fan surveys and spoke to its players about what could possibly be the new goal song. Following a long process of elimination, MLSE’s Chief Marketing Officer Shannon Hosford told the Toronto Sun that it decided on a song that could also influence game-night ambience.
Hosford also mentioned that the Hall & Oates song might make an appearance once again during an Original Six night.
The reason behind the change is because many fans had mixed feelings about “You Make My Dreams (Come True),” with half either loving it or hating it.
So far, some fans are responding well to the EDM/Hip Hop hit “Pursuit of Happiness.”
Meanwhile, others are not vibing with the new anthem.
