‘Truly heartbreaking,’ Beloved Scarborough restaurant Lucky Lin’s is closing after 30+ years

A beloved Scarborough restaurant is preparing to close after more than 30 years in business, leaving Toronto foodies heartbroken.

Guyanese-Chinese restaurant Lucky Lin’s announced on social media that it will be closing its doors on Jan. 15 after its landlord decided not to renew the lease.

Known for its signature Caribbean-style fried rice and deep-fried chicken, the family-owned restaurant has been serving the east end since 1991, at 5563 Finch Ave. E.

In an Instagram post, Lucky Lin’s said it is currently searching for a new location after being forced to vacate its longtime home.

The restaurant also shared that co-owner Mr. Ken will be stepping away to pursue “his own endeavours.”

“We will remain open daily during the holiday season until January 13, 2026, and we warmly invite you to visit and celebrate with us,” the restaurant said in a statement. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your incredible support over the past 34 years. Your loyalty means the world to us, and we look forward to serving you soon.”

The news has devastated longtime customers, many of whom have travelled from near and far over the decades to enjoy the restaurant’s extensive menu.

Social media quickly filled with messages of appreciation and sadness, as guests shared memories and expressed hope that Lucky Lin’s will find a new home in Scarborough.

“I hope you find a new location in Scarborough. Enjoyed your food for the past 34 years. So sad to hear Ken is leaving,” one Instagram user wrote. “You have been a staple in Scarborough for all those years.”

“You guys have been there since I was a kid. Hopefully you find a new spot, shoutout Mr. Ken,” another added.

“Truly heartbreaking. One of my favourites growing up,” a Reddit user shared, while another wrote, “Very sad about this, great food for a great price.”

The restaurant did not share why the lease was not renewed or provide further details about the ownership change. 

Now Toronto reached out to Lucky Lin’s for comment but did not receive a response.
