TTC riders can now travel for free for the rest of the month after making 47 paid trips, as fare-capping officially takes effect.
Starting Sept. 1, customers paying with the same PRESTO card, debit or credit card, or mobile wallet card in a calendar month will have their TTC fares capped after 47 paid trips.
The fare cap was included in Mayor Olivia Chow’s 2026 budget as an affordability measure, alongside a freeze on TTC fares at $3.50 for a third consecutive year.
Once riders reach 47 paid trips in a month, they can travel for free on the TTC for the remainder of that month.
Riders should continue to tap their card or device when boarding, even after reaching the cap, to ensure their Proof-of-Payment is validated according to the TTC.
“With monthly fare capping, customers can take comfort knowing that they will receive the best value when regularly travelling on the TTC,” said TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali in a news release. “This is another way the TTC is committed to making the system more affordable, convenient and reliable for our customers.”
The 47-trip fare cap is part of a multi-year plan outlined in Toronto’s 2026 budget, which said the city would work toward reducing the cap to 40 rides per month by 2027.
For now, riders who regularly use the TTC will need to make 47 paid trips in a calendar month before the cap kicks in.
The new system is intended to ensure frequent TTC riders receive the best value from their fares, while the city continues its focus on transit affordability.
Several TTC monthly passes are being discontinued
The introduction of monthly fare capping also means several TTC monthly passes have been discontinued.
The Youth, Adult and Senior TTC Monthly Passes, as well as the Youth and Senior 12-Month Passes, are no longer available.
However, some riders should continue purchasing monthly or annual passes.
Adult customers who subscribed to the 12-Month Pass and post-secondary students who purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass should continue to buy these passes, as they guarantee the lowest fare and best value.
Adults can subscribe to the 12-Month Pass through PRESTO.
Post-secondary students can purchase a TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass online through PRESTO, via the PRESTO app and at Shoppers Drug Mart locations or PRESTO Customer Service Outlets.
Students must have a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID Card to purchase and load a monthly pass onto their PRESTO card.
The photo ID cards are available for sale from the TTC Photo ID Centre at Bathurst Station or at select on-campus locations throughout September and October.
September passes are available for sale until Sept. 8.
