Things just got a whole lot easier for Toronto transit users.

Ontario is officially (and finally) launching credit and debit payment on the TTC this month in order to make travelling around the city more convenient for Torontonians.

Starting on Aug.15, riders won’t have to depend on their PRESTO cards or pocket change to hop on a bus, subway or streetcar.

And if customers don’t have their physical card on them, they can use their phone or smartwatch.

“Our government is working with our municipal partners to make it easier and more convenient for transit riders to get from point A to point B,” Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, said in a press release on Thursday.

“We are continuing to improve PRESTO services by introducing new and innovative payment options that make fare payments easier,” she added.

TTC riders can also use credit or debit to pay fares on GO Transit, UP Express, Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, MiWay (in Mississauga), Oakville Transit and York Region Transit.

That’s not all, the provincial government is also working with Metrolinx to introduce virtual PRESTO cards for mobile wallets in the coming months.

“As a transit rider, I’m pleased to have new options for paying my fare quickly and conveniently,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said in a statement.

“As Mayor, I am committed to making the TTC more reliable and convenient for everyone, and today’s announcement is an exciting step in the right direction.”
