upfront: Money to Burn

Rating: NNNNN

It’s obvious from scanning Melvin Douglas Lastman’s recently released 2000 campaign disclosure that the mayor wasn’t content to cruise to an easy victory. He demanded homage in the form of cold, hard cash. The city’s corporate bigwigs obliged by helping the one-time swinging fridge magnate amass a $1.2 million war chest to beat back his closest mayoral rival, Tooker Gomberg, who raised a whopping $92,000.

Mel spent over $112,000 on advertising alone, $114,000 on brochures, $183,00 on office expenses, $90,000 on salaries and benefits and $53,000 on signs. The $364,000 Mel didn’t spend was put into a city trust account that he can access if he decides to run again. God help us.

Do the right thing, Mel, donate it to the budget pool.
