UpFront: Tooker Battles City

Rating: NNNNN

Green mayoral candidate Tooker Gomberg raised $92,000 for last fall’s stab at Mel. Not bad for an alternative candidate running in his first mayoral contest. Problem is, the campaign spent $104,000 and now the city elections office says Gomberg can’t extend the campaign-period window to legally raise the $12,000 difference.

The extension request submitted before the December 31 deadline was signed by Gomberg’s partner and campaign manager, Angela Bischoff. But that’s not good enough for the city. The Elections Act calls for the candidate’s signature on the request.

Lawyers have been brought in on both sides, and it could get ugly. Gomberg, who still owes suppliers, has raised $5,000 outside the window but may have to return the money to contributors.
