With TTC fares set to rise June 3, Upfront decided to take a look at how Tory Toronto stacks up against separatist Montreal for a ticket to ride. While Toronto's public transit authority relies on the fare box for over 80 per cent of its funding, a larger proportion than any other transit system in North America, Montreal nets only 44 per cent from the fare box. The rest comes from the generous municipal and Parti Quebecois governments. While Toronto's cash fare will be only 25 cents higher than Montreal's, the discrepancy in the cost of a monthly pass is glaring: Toronto $93.50, Montreal $48.50. The sooner T.O. separates from the transit-killing Tories, the better. Vive le Toronto libre!
