Well-known Canadian brand Zellers is making its comeback this year with nine new pop-up locations planning to open across Ontario this spring.
The pop-up shops will be located inside Hudson Bay stores. Three of the Ontario locations will be in the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga’s Erin Mills Town Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, and Burlington Mall.
“Customers will be greeted with a thoughtful selection of design-led products across home decor, toys, baby, apparel, and pets, housed within Zellers’ signature red and white that will guide customers along in their retail journey.” the retailer said in a press release on Wednesday.
Zellers is planning to open a total of 25 pop-up stores simultaneously across Canada this spring.
In addition to the nine stores in Ontario, four will be located in B.C., three in Alberta, one each in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, five in Quebec, and two in Nova Scotia. The chain says additional stores may open at a later date.
The pop-ups are all expected to be between 8,000 to 10,000 square feet depending on location.
And for those who’d rather shop from the comfort of their home, Zellers will be launching its first-ever e-commerce site zellers.ca this spring too.
The reprise of the discount retail store comes at an opportune time when inflation and rising costs of living have many Canadians revamping household budgets.
Zellers, founded in 1931 was acquired by HBC in 1978. It was then bought out by Target with the aim to bring the much-loved American chain to Canada. The majority of Zellers stores (125) were converted into Target retailers, leaving HBC with only 64 stores. In 2012, HBC said it was not feasible to keep the remaining stores open, however, still retained the trademark rights to the brand until 2020. The last store closed in 2013, and Target Canada was quick to follow – folding in 2015.
