Just because Wimbledon has crowned its champion, doesn’t mean tennis season is over yet. The Canadian Open kicks off Aug. 1 in Toronto and Montreal.
Also known as the National Bank Open, the women’s Canadian Open is one of 10 international tournaments under the 1000 designation under the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The men’s Canadian Open under the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) will be held in Montreal at the same time.
The Canadian Open will run from Saturday, Aug. 1 to Thursday, Aug. 13 at Sobey’s Stadium in North York and Stade IGA in Montreal.
As a WTA and ATP 1000 competition, top players are expected to play as part of the 2026 tour and it’s an opportunity for players to gain points and improve their ranking.
Players who compete in the Canadian Open can earn a maximum of 1000 points, which is below the 2000s points players can earn at the four major grand slams: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open.
Canadian players to watch out for
Among the top players competing at the Canadian Open are a group of Canadians who are looking to improve their standings and go home with prize money.
On the women’s side, Leylah Annie Fernandez is the top ranked Canadian tennis player. At only 23 years old, she has won four WTA Tour singles. In last year’s Canadian Open, she lost in the round of 16.
Mississauga native Bianca Andreescu made waves in 2019 when she won the Canadian Open, beating tennis legend Serena Williams. This year, she’s competing as a wild card. Organizers usually do this to give players whose rankings are a chance at competing. Speaking of the GTA, Richmond Hill’s Ariana Arsenault was also picked as a wild card. She is ranked number 404 in the world.
Victoria Mboko, the 2025 Canadian Open champion, will not be competing this year. She withdrew due to a MCL injury. The 18-year-old shocked the tennis world last year after defeating tennis superstar Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the final round.
On the men’s side, Félix Auger-Aliassime is a Montreal-born tennis player who is currently ranked number four in the world and first in Canada. In last year’s competition, he withdrew during the second round.
Joining him in the competition is Denis Shapovalov. He is currently ranked 68th in the world and in the 2025 tournament, he exited early in the round of 64.
The final Canadian competitor to play in Montreal is Gabriel Diallo, who was added to the tournament as a wild card. He lost in last year’s competition to Tristan Boyer from the U.S. in the round of 32.
