Are you still serving chips and salsa or veggies and dip to your guests? It’s almost 2026, which means it’s time to take this adulting thing seriously. Stop letting the first bites be the afterthought; impress your guests by turning your appetizers into hors d’oeuvres.

Puff pastry bites

Puff pastry is the ultimate key to elevating a dish, and the best part: it’s easy and gives you complete creative freedom.

Brie, prosciutto, and pear? Yum.

Crème fraîche, chives, and caviar? Bougie.

There may be some minor preparations involved such as caramelizing some onions or chopping up some brie, but this is probably one of the easiest appetizers to whip up. Just head to the frozen aisle of your grocery store and pick up some puff pastry.

Upside-down puff pastry tarts

Have you ever looked at the beautiful puff pastry tarts at your local gourmet bakery and wondered: How on Earth did they do that? Well, chances are, they were baked upside down. It’s quite simple. The toppings get placed onto the parchment paper which are then covered with a sheet of puff pastry. The final product can be as small or as big as you want them to be.

Individual charcuterie skewers

A giant cutting board of meats and cheeses may look beautiful, but it can be quite intimidating not only for the host but also for the guest. Which knife belongs to which cheese? Is the goat cheese cut with a knife or scooped with a spoon? Not to mention, with the rise in flu cases around this time of year, individually-portioned charcuterie skewers may be the way to go! Have fun with the ingredients and sprinkle on some fresh herbs for the extra festive touch.

Stuffed dates

Dates are another great vessel to experiment with; their sweet yet subtle base becomes a great canvas for sweet or savoury toppings that will go perfectly on their own or with a slice of baguette. Cheddar stuffed and topped with walnuts? Stuffed with almonds and wrapped in bacon? The world is your date.

Stuffed olives

Some of your guests may not be fans of olives but stuffing them with Boursin might change their mind. Stuff them, coat them, cover them, glaze them; the little round balls are bite-sized, and perfectly salty. You can take them one step further by breading and deep frying them.

Sausage bites

If you thought sausages couldn’t be appetizers, think again. Slice them up into rounds, and skewer them with other ingredients to make the perfect bite. If smoked sausage, cheddar, and cranberry doesn’t scream holidays, we don’t know what does. Feel free to play around with the accompaniments — we suggest pairing the fatty sausage with something salty (cheese, an olive, a gherkin) and something tangy (cranberry, a cube of pineapple or green apple).

(Not your typical) egg rolls

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. The wonton wrappers you find at the grocery store are not just for spring rolls or dumplings. They are what you put inside them. Cheddar, ground beef, and onion? Boom, cheeseburger egg rolls. Cream cheese, chicken, and hot sauce? Boom, buffalo chicken egg rolls. Stuff them, roll them, deep fry or bake them, you’ve got yourself an easy and delicious fusion.

Crispy prosciutto cups

Who says the base of your tarts has to be a pastry? Turn your appetizer gluten-free by substituting prosciutto for the crust. Instead of dough, bake slices of prosciutto into a cup using a muffin tin. Once they’re out of the oven and cooled, fill the crispy cups with whatever your heart desires. Make it Italian with bocconcini and cherry tomatoes or go the French route with brie and dijon.
