Playwrights Canada Press hit the jackpot at the nominations for the 2010 Governor General’s Literary Awards.
All five of the plays in the drama category (in English) were published by the Toronto-based organization, one of the main organs for promoting the work of Canadian playwrights.
The list includes well-known writers Michael Healey (Courageous), Judith Thompson (Such Creatures) and Robert Chafe (Afterimage) and younger artists Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman (Scratch) and David Yee (lady in the red dress).
Local audiences have seen all the plays in production over the past few years, courtesy of Tarragon, Factory, Theatre Passe Muraille, fu-GEN and Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage.
Healey and Thompson are past winners of the GG in drama, Healey for The Drawer Boy and Thompson for White Biting Dog and a collection called The Other Side Of The Dark.
Look for several of them – as well as other playwrights, among them Sky Gilbert, Florence Gibson MacDonald and Mary Vingoe – to read at a Playwrights Canada Press book launch November 8 at Buddies in Bad Times.
