A Canadian actor is one of the stars of the second-highest-grossing film of 2024 worldwide!

In 2024, some highly anticipated films hit the big screen, including several sequels and animated films. In fact, all five of the highest-earning films of 2024 were sequels, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo

Here are the top five highest-grossing films of 2024. 

INSIDE OUT 2

Inside Out 2 snagged the top spot at the box office for 2024, raking in more than a whopping $1.6 billion USD.

The animated family comedy was released in June 2024 as a sequel to the 2015 original and follows protagonist Riley, now entering puberty, through the more complex emotions that come with being a teenager.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

The second-highest-grossing film of 2024 was Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned over $1.3 billion USD.

The superhero film sees Canadian sweetheart Ryan Reynolds return to the role of Deadpool for the third time,  joined by Hugh Jackman who reprises his role as Wolverine. Released in July 2024, the film sees the duo embark on a mission to save Deadpool’s universe. 

DESPICABLE ME 4

The fourth film in the Despicable Me franchise was the third-highest-grossing film of 2024, bringing in over $969 million USD after its July 3 release.

The animated family movie follows the main character Gru, his wife Lucy and their three daughters as they welcome a new member into their family. Gru and company also face new foes Maxime Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, and are forced to go into hiding for their protection.

MOANA 2

The second Moana film took the fourth spot at the box office for 2024, earning more than $883 million USD worldwide following its November 2024 cinematic release. 

The new animated family movie begins three years after the end of the original movie and follows Princess Moana as she takes off on a new adventure after receiving a call from her ancestors.

DUNE: PART TWO

Rounding out the top five movies of the year is Dune: Part Two, from Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, earning over $714 million USD after its March release. 

The second installment in the science fiction series picks up where the 2021 original left off and sees Paul (Timothée Chalamet), Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen seek revenge on those who destroyed Paul’s family. Things are further complicated when he is faced with a difficult choice between the fate of the universe and the love of his life.
