Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro shared a sneaky snap of himself on set of his new film in Toronto this week and cinephiles are having a field day!
Production of Del Toro’s Frankenstein for Netflix is slated to begin in early February, and the director gave fans a glimpse of what’s to come in the form of an ominous-looking ship that appeared in the background of a selfie he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Toronto, the studio, today. Looks like somebody parked on my spot,” he jokingly captioned the X post.
The Mexican filmmaker is known for directing reality-bending epics such as The Shape of Water, for which he won the Academy Award in the Best Director category, Pan’s Labyrinth, and the 2023 animated version of Pinocchio.
His latest project is based on Mary Shelley’s classic gothic novel, which follows a young Dr. Frankenstein on his unrelenting and morally contentious pursuit to create life, triggering a stream of consequences reaching far beyond his control.
According to Netflix Del Toro has been working on a Frankenstein movie for more than a decade.
Following his post, eager film fans flocked to X to discuss which scene the ship could be part of and pointed out how fitting the foggy weather was, given the eerie nature of the classic masterpiece.
“The dense fog today was totally out of a horror movie! So appropriate!” one X user commented.
“I’m reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein right now for the first time. Is that the ship that finds dr. Frankenstein in the beginning?” another person wrote.
Members of the star-studded cast were also spotted sharing a meal at beloved Thai spot, PAI this week.
The restaurant’s Executive Chef, Jeff Regular shared a picture of his staff smiling alongside the likes of Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, Charles Dance and Guillermo del Toro, following a meal at the Michelin-recommended joint.
Saltburn anti-hero Jacob Elordi is also set to star, Netflix confirmed.
Toronto is known for being Del Toro’s filming city of choice.
‘The Shape of Water’ was shot here and in Hamilton, including at Massey Hall, Elgin Theatre, and University of Toronto Scarborough, according to movielocations.com
Frankenstein will be released on Netflix, an official date is yet to be confirmed.
