What to know

  • A major winter storm moving north from the U.S. could bring 20 to 30 cm of snow to Toronto starting Sunday morning and lasting into early Monday.
  • Lake-effect snow from Lake Ontario may intensify conditions, with Environment Canada warning snowfall totals could be higher than forecast.
  • The agency is urging residents to avoid or rearrange travel, especially Sunday evening, as blowing snow and icy roads are expected.
  • The storm arrives as Toronto braces for the coldest morning of the winter, with wind chills dipping to -30 C or colder this weekend.

A major winter storm brewing south of the border could bring between 20 to 30 cm of snow to Toronto this weekend.

Winter is in full swing, with Environment Canada forecasting a heavy storm headed to the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday.

The storm is set to begin in the morning and will continue throughout Sunday night, and is projected to end by Monday’s morning rush hour.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Trudy Kidd says the weather coming is the northern edge resulting from a winter storm moving through the U.S., and Toronto will likely get the worst of it due to enhanced lake effects from Lake Ontario. She says the forecast calls for up to 30 cm, but warns it could be higher.

“If people can help it, rearrange travel plans to [Saturday], if possible. If not, get the travelling done sooner than later in the day on Sunday, before the snow starts accumulating,” Kidd said to Now Toronto.

She also cautions drivers to take their time on the road.

“Be prepared by giving yourself lots of extra time to travel to your destination, lots of space between yourself and the vehicle in front, and then check those wipers – make sure they’re in good working condition and lots of wiper fluid,” Kidd added.

The storm warning comes amid the agency predicting that this weekend will bring “the coldest morning of the winter” so far. Environment Canada has issued a yellow cold weather warning on Friday for wind chills near -30 and -33 C.
