If you’re looking for an excuse to get outside and enjoy the start of fall, Spadina Museum has a good one.
The historic Toronto museum is hosting its annual fall festival on Sunday, Sept. 27, bringing an afternoon of live music, dancing, art, food and family-friendly activities to its gardens and grounds.
The free event runs from noon to 4:30 p.m., making it a stellar option for anyone looking to spend a few hours outdoors without leaving the city.
Here’s what’s going down
What’s a festival without great music? Inspiración Latina will be teaching drop-in salsa lessons at 12:30 and 2 p.m. And yes, you can actually join in even if your salsa skills are questionable. The lessons are open to beginners, so consider this your sign to give it a shot.
There’s plenty happening beyond the dance floor, too. James Wilson performs live on his guitar from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Families can try their hand at croquet or badminton and make leaf drawings and rubbings to add to a community tree.
The museum itself will also be part of the experience, with interpretation stations set up throughout the main floor for visitors who want to learn more about the historic property.
History lovers can also take advantage of a working printing press from Mackenzie House to print a souvenir to take home. Toronto’s First Post Office, the Tollkeeper’s Cottage, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Toronto Botanical Garden, will be on site with activations and information.
The fall season wouldn’t truly be a hit without apples, so Not Far From the Tree will be bringing an orchard-inspired experience to the festival as well. Here, visitors can taste different varieties, learn how to identify them and see how apples are pressed.
To accompany a jam-packed exciting day, there will also be a few local food and drink options to keep you fuelled while you explore. Ed’s Real Scoop will be serving ice cream, while Spirited Tarts & Coffee will have drinks and baked goods.
Dive into art, stories and community
For something a little more hands-on, Mexican-Canadian artist Loudres Fuentes will lead an art activity inspired by monarch butterflies.
Eastcliff Farm will also be selling flowers, garden décor and seasonal arrangements.
The St. Clair West Oral History Project will also be collecting neighbourhood memories, with visitors invited to write, draw or record a short audio story about a favourite local memory.
So whether you’re going for the salsa moves, the yummy apples, the exciting live music or simply want somewhere pretty to spend a Sunday afternoon, Spadina Museum is giving Torontonians plenty of reasons to get outside this September.
