Toronto’s Korea Town is hosting its first-ever street festival next month with tons of activities, performances and authentic eats.
Korea Town, located along Bloor Street between Christie and Bathurst streets, will be transformed into a bustling zone full of local talent and the spirit of the community on Aug. 10.
“This festival is a significant milestone for our community. It’s a celebration of the rich culture, traditions, and vibrant spirit of Korea Town, providing an opportunity for people to immerse themselves in food, music, and customs, as well as the many diverse cultures represented in the BIA,” a media spokesperson for Korea Town BIA told Now Toronto on Monday.
“For our local businesses, it’s a chance to showcase their unique offerings to a broader audience, fostering a sense of unity and pride within the neighbourhood…We’ve worked hard to create an inclusive and festive atmosphere that honours both our heritage and current diverse community representation while inviting everyone to join in the celebration,” they continued.
According to a media release, the festival will feature performances by Korean artists such as traditional dancer Jianna (Jihyun) Back and traditional drumming by Samulnori Canada.
Meanwhile, musical performances will include The Heavyweights Brass band, Ryan Gazzola, and Jazz/Korean world fusion band Haneum, among others.
The family-friendly event will include several interactive experiences such as Korean games, face painting and a kids’ activity zone.
There will also be free Tibetan singing bowl demonstrations, ASMR sessions, sewing machine tryouts, temporary tattoos and free fitness activities.
A media spokesperson for the festival says the decision to host the very first festival stems from a growing desire to bring the community together and share the richness of its BIA with the wider Toronto area.
“The Korea Town BIA has been planning and preparing for this event with great enthusiasm, and we believe it will mark the beginning of an annual tradition that strengthens community bonds and attracts more visitors to our area. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there and making this event a memorable experience for all,” they said.
The festival will take place on Euclid Ave, from Bloor St. W. to Oscar Ryan Lane from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation to the event as street parking will be very limited.
