In January, there are lots of events that will help you explore hidden gems in the city this season. Whether you’re a fan of informative cultural tours or prefer a night of non-stop laughing at a comedy show, there’s an array of activities for everyone to enjoy and participate in.
Here’s some events you can check out in Toronto this month.
ART
Winners and Losers – Toronto’s Sports Histories at Myseum of Toronto
Take a trip down memory lane and remember pivotal moments in Toronto’s sports history at Myseum of Toronto’s Winners & Losers: Toronto Sports Histories. This exhibit will have you reminiscing about iconic moments in sports such as basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, football and boxing. Admission is free and the exhibit runs until Mar. 9. The museum is open from Wednesday to Friday, 12 to 6 p.m. and weekends from 12 to 8 p.m.

Free Public Guided Tours at The ROM
The Royal Ontario Museum is offering free 45-minute English and French tours all month long from 11 to 2 p.m. Visitors can see the museum’s beloved dinosaur skeletons, as well as its ongoing current exhibitions, such as Noelle Hamlyn: Lifers, Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery, and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023. The guided tours are included with your general admission tickets.

CULTURE AND HERITAGE
Wheel of Year Walks
Experience an audio tour of Toronto neighbourhoods with your smartphone at the Wheel of the Year Walks, presented by B current Performing Arts, happening all month long. The walks are a sonic journey curated by Black and Brown artists. They will use different aspects of technology to provide personal, observational and historical knowledge of classic neighbourhoods across the city.

STAGE
Thursday Laugh Therapy
They say the best form of therapy is laughter so the Thursday Laugh Therapy show at The Comedy Lab is the perfect place to be. The show includes some of the city’s rising stars in comedy from professionals to up-and-coming comedians. General admission tickets are $19.13 each. Show dates are Jan. 11, 18, and 25.

MUSIC
42nd STREET
Mirvish Productions presents a brand new production of ‘the original showbiz musical,’ 42nd STREET! This play centres on small town girl Peggy Sawyer who arrives in New York City with big dreams of being a star. A big-time director scouts the young girl and she suddenly finds herself in the position she’s always dreamed of. Visitors can hear popular hits such as the classic “42nd Street,” “We’re In The Money,” and “Lullaby of Broadway,” among others. Tickets range from $59 to $160 depending on seating and the show runs until Jan. 21.

FESTIVALS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
The Swiftie Escape
Calling on Swifties! It’s time to unite and try your hand at a Taylor Swift-themed escape room. If you’re truly the biggest fan of the international pop star, then this should be an easy feat. The Swiftie Escape will have fans decoding the snakes, the 13’s and many other clues only true Swifities will understand. The event is happening at 1615 Dupont Street until April 14.

Dry January
If you enjoy cocktails, but not so much the alcohol part, then you have to check out the Toronto Mocktail Competition at El Mocambo on Jan. 13. Organized by the Sobar Social Club, the Toronto Mocktail Competition is an alcohol-free event that provides tasty mocktails by six talented mixologists, food by O’Frenchy, a live DJ, an interactive photo booth and an on-site wellness market. The event begins at 6 until 10:30 p.m.

Waterfront Skating
Bring family and friends to Sherbourne Common Ice Rink for some waterfront skating where you can witness amazing views of Lake Ontario and the downtown skyline. Every Saturday, starting on Jan. 6 until Feb. 10, the rink is giving out free hot chocolate and playing popular tunes while visitors ice skate. The rink is open from 10 to 10 p.m. all month long.

WinterViews presented by RendezViews
WinterViews presented by RendezViews is an experience like a cottage retreat with private dining cabins, a cozy lodge and of course, an ice rink. Skating and equipment rental is free for guests but on a first come, first serve basis. Those who stay in its toasty lodge can also try its full food and beverage menu, along with a special selection of hot drinks. WinterViews is open on Wednesday and Thursdays from 5 to 10:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturdays from 5 to 1 a.m.

Skate Library
If you’d like to ice skate but don’t own a pair of skates, then you can check out the Skate Lending Library truck, an initiative provided by the City of Toronto. The Skate Lending Library provides free access to skates, helmets, and skating aids. No prior reservation is needed and skaters can locate the truck through its schedule here.
