Toronto’s getting a sci-fi themed bar and gallery

The landscape of Toronto’s nerd culture (or however much of it lives in meatspace, anyway) is shifting. A combination comic shop and cafe, The Sidekick, opened in Leslieville last month, and now, the west end is getting its own new epicentre of all things geek and sundry.

See-Scape is a cafe, art gallery, bar, studio and gaming space set to open next month at 2840 Dundas West, near Keele. Owner Sara Nguyen, who works as a makeup artist and special effects pro, says she wanted to combine all of her loves and hobbies under one roof.

“I didn’t think there was a place that had all that stuff,” she says.

Nguyen promises a strong sci-fi theme throughout, as well as a collection of vintage gaming consoles (including Sega and Nintendo systems) available for use. The space will also include a basement art studio available for artists to loan out, with shows happening upstairs. (Look for some of the art to follow the theme: Early exhibits, Nguyen hints, may or may not include a stained-glass Darth Vader.)

While Nguyen and her team get the spot’s liquor license in order, look for See-Scape to open as a cafe by the end of August.
