Ka’Kia kick off

If you’re looking for me this spring, I’ll be at Neubacher Shor Contemporary.

The Queen and Brock gallery, opened last month by the Art Stylists’ Manny Neubacher and Anya Shor, has quickly become the season’s hub for fashion launches and mixers.

Next week, Greta Constantine designers Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill debut their Danier collaboration collection SKIN there (FYI: the duo are also premiering a lower priced line called Primer at TNT tonight) and our MyStyle photographer Stefania Yarhi takes over the space to host a third birthday bash for her Textstyles website in early June.

On Tuesday, it was The Society’s turn. The group teamed up with designer Alana Kakia to launch her capsule Ka’Kia clothing collection for Holiday 2011 as part of their ABSOLUT Art Series.

In the centre of the gallery, open weave knits, slouchy leather jackets and mullet slips were suspended from the ceiling above a bed of miniature succulents and cacti. A mood board collage made up of rustic frames, shots of models on motorcycles and shadow boxed scorpion specimens hinted at the line’s desert inspiration point.

Twitter has it that buyers from The Narwhal in Rosedale liked what they saw and will carry the collection this coming fall.

Between events, NSC is presenting a Contact Photography Festival exhibition called Paradise featuring the work of Larry Fink and Alain Le Fort. Le Fort’s digitally manipulated wilderness landscapes are screaming to become a fashion photo print but it’s Fink’s late-50s images of the Beat Generation in New York City that may prove to be the most style-spirational.

Both shows continue until May 29.
